What needs to happen before a Pandemic is started?
Three things must happen before a pandemic is started:
- A new influenza virus subtype must emerge.
- It must infect humans and cause serious illness; and
- It must spread easily and be sustained (continue without interruption) among humans.
The H5N1 virus in Asia and Europe meets the first two conditions: it is a new virus for humans (H5N1 viruses have never circulated widely among people), and it has infected more than 100 humans, killing over half of them.
The third condition has not yet occurred. The H5N1 virus would have to change in such a way that it could spread more easily among humans.
The CDC advises: “This could occur either by ‘reassortment’ or adaptive mutation. Reassortment occurs when genetic material is exchanged between human and avian viruses during co-infection (infection with both viruses at the same time) of a human or a pig. The result could be a fully transmissible pandemic virus — that is, a virus that can spread easily and directly to humans. A more gradual process is adaptive mutation, where the capability of a virus to bind to human cells increases during infections of humans.”
Ways the Flu Viruses are transmitted
- Direct Contact – Infection can occur from direct contact with affected people or contaminated objects by small particles. Infected animal and human fluids and wastes are just as deadly. Avoid unnecessary contact with infected animals and humans.
- Wind – Dust and feather particles in the wind can blow from infested chickens on to people or on water storage areas.
- Coughing or body fluids – Body fluids such as a runny nose, mouth, or the eyes from an infected person will be contaminated with the H5N1 virus. It’s a good idea to always wear a mask, goggles, gloves, and a gown when you are around an infected person. Always wash hands with a hospital grade antimicrobial hand wash.
- Water contaminated by the virus – We suggest that you boil your water and never use water from house roofs, lakes, rivers, or anyplace you find bird droppings.
- Farms – The H5N1 virus can be transmitted through feathers, dust particles, flies, insects, feed sacks, egg cartons, or anything that comes from a farm. Manure from farm animals can also contaminate your gardens and or vegetables.
- Birds or animals as carriers – Birds who are susceptible to the H5N1 virus are turkeys, ducks, swans, and geese. Other mammals that were given infected chicken meat to eat were infected.
- Handling or eating infected chickens – Always completely cook your chicken, meat, or eggs.
- Breathing contaminated airborne aerosols – There are water particles in the air that can be contaminated by viruses. Because the particles are so small, they can enter your body through the eyes. Masks and goggles must be worn near infected people to reduce the risk of infection.
Symptoms
The incubation period varies from 2 to 10 days. This means that the symptoms appear in approximately that time after the virus has first entered the body. A person doesn’t always show the symptoms if they are infected. The infected person should be quarantined even after the fever stops. An adult is considered contagious until 7 days after the fever stops and children under 12 years of age are very contagious from the first signs of illness.
The list below is common symptoms:
- Sore throat
- Mild cold and cough
- Shortness of breath
- Fever
- Diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain
- Mild to severe respiratory distress
- Severe cases report large amounts of mucous accumulated in the lungs which limits breathing
The list below is common complications:
- Renal failure
- Bleeding
- Multi organ failure
Infected people surviving the bird flu become immune to the particular strain in the future. These people may be asked to be frontline workers during the pandemic.

Necessities for your Family Survival Kit

- Shoe covers: The kind that doctors and nurses use for their shoes. You can also use plastic bags over your shoes and seal them with elastic ties.

- Thermometer: A must for every household.

- Trash can or Garbage Bins – foot activated Place one near patient and one in another area of the house to reduce contamination.

- Flashlight, Matches, Candles, Lanterns: Used for blackouts
- Water, food: Including but not limited to soups, powdered milk, canned juices, and manual can opener. Purchase gallons of distilled water, canned foods, & soups. Note that there will be an immediate shortage of these supplies. Get stocked up way ahead of time. Store in bins
- General Medical Supplies: Stock up on things that you normally keep in your medicine cabinet. Remember to stock up on fever reducers, anti-inflammatory meds, bandages/Band-Aids, etc.
- Paper cups, Paper plates, & plastic utensils Be prepared to be self sufficient
- Gas heaters & Gas stoves: Used in the event of power shortage
- Generator: Used in the event of power shortage
Tips on Caring For an Infected Person
In the event that the pandemic strikes and we are in the middle of this war, it’s important to realize that medical facilities nay not be available to us. That is why it’s important to be self sufficient.
If the situation arises and you are the caregiver of an infected person, it’s important to understand that the best care they can receive is right in their home. This is a virus; therefore, antibiotics do not work on viruses. A virus or the flu, just like any other type of virus or flu, must run its course. It’s important to understand that disinfection and sterilization are the most important things. You should focus your efforts, and that of your household, to eliminate any sources of infections.
Clean the room daily with a hospital grade disinfectant such as PuraCleenRx™. The caregiver should always wear full, protective clothing when handling the patient. Keep doors closed at all times and outside windows open.
The infected person should first be placed in an isolated room. You want to pick a small room that can be completely disinfected daily (No Carpets). Remove anything that cannot be disinfected from the room.
You want to seal the room with some form of a barrier between the patient and the rest of the people in the household. Keep the room very warm by using a heater, the hot air helps destroy the virus.
Monitor the patient regularly and keep tabs on the temperature of the room. If fever sets in, turn off the heater, continuously wipe the patients’ body and head with a cool wet cloth or sponge. If the patient becomes too hot, strip the patient temporarily.
As soon as the head and body gets cooler, then warm the patient by covering them with a blanket and turn heater on again. You may have to perform this process several tomes until the patients temperature stabilizes.
Severe cases are different and require medical help because the patient simply cannot breath on their own and must be placed on ventilators.
It’s important that the patient does not dehydrate. Medication most often is a problem because they cannot keep their medication, water, or nutrients in their stomach due to vomiting and diarrhea. Water can also be given to an extremely sick patient through enemas. Penetration into the rectum does not need to be deep. Dissolved medications and nutrients cal also be given this way and are absorbed quickly and effectively.
The care giver must be totally disinfected once they have left the room and all protective clothing removed immediately for sanitation.

Difference between Colonized and Infected
Colonized
Being colonized is not the same as getting infected. Colonization means that the staph bacteria are carried in more than one place in our body without having any adverse effects or illnesses. Colonies can live on any skin areas especially the hands, inside the nose, inside the throat, inside the underarms, on the perineum, or in the bowel. You can find out if you are being colonized by asking a physician to do a culture swab. Once you found out if you or other family members carry MRSA, you can treat it, avoid contact with others or wear a mask/ gloves to prevent MRSA transfer from you to others.
Infected
When you become infected, the Staph bacteria enters the body through any open wound (bug bites, cuts, scrapes, scratches, etc).
